Why Do We Have To Use Protection During Anal Sex & Rimming
When partaking in any type of butt stuff, it is recommended to use barrier protection methods like condoms and dental dams.
This goes for toys, as well as penises, especially if you are sharing them.
This makes it harder for sexually transmitted infections to spread. A big STI that can be spread from unprotected sex is HIV, you can learn more about this here.
Dental dams are recommended for rimming (more on this further down) but can be hard to find in shops. Fear not, these can be made from condoms – you can watch me do this below!
On top of using barrier methods it is recommended to get into the habit of also doing the following:
- Clean your sex toys thoroughly between uses, even when using condoms with them.
- Clean the area to avoid bacteria like ecoli passing on – showering together before is also a great idea to keep it safe and sexy.
- Go for regular STI tests (every 6 months or every time you have a new partner).
- Do not engage in rimming if there are open sores/cuts on the mouth, anus or genitals.
- Do not 'double-dip' as this is a one-way ticket to UTI town (vagina to anus and vice versa).
- If you are engaging in regular anal sex, explore PrEP.

Anal Sex Top Tips
If you want to try anal sex for the first time, here are my top tips to get the most pleasure!
Communicate First.
Of course, relaxing is easier said than done. Try and talk about it before it happens so it’s not such a shock. Read up about it and see if it’s something your partner is down for.
Make sure you are both down for it and if you are receiving, make sure you want to try rather than feeling pressured or because your partner wants it.
Breathe, Breathe Breathe.
The key to enjoying anything that goes in your butt is to be relaxed. Your anus tightens when you are nervous, even in a non-sexual setting, and if it’s tight there’s no hope. If you do still try, it’s going to hurt.
Start Small.
Don’t go straight into the full-on penis-in-butt sex. That will be a little bit of a shock. Play with your partner or by yourself with toys or fingers first.
Get your body used to something going in, instead of just things going out. Most importantly, take your time.
If it hurts at any point, stop.
If you have a penis and want to try pegging with your partner, do the above making sure to go for smaller toys and a strap, rather than something giant!
Lube It Up.
If you’ve read anything else from me, you’ll know I’m a BIG advocate for lube. It makes everything better and when it comes to butt stuff, it’s a MUST.
Your anus is not self-lubricating.
Mess.
Make sure you’re fairly empty and that you are not unwell before partaking in anal sex. This rule has always worked for me, but if the mess is something you are worried about, maybe douche or lay down a towel.You both know what comes out, and if either of you can’t cope with the possibility then you should probably avoid it!
Control.
This is my favourite tip that I’ve found works wonders for pleasurable anal sex.
If you are receiving make sure you’re the one that’s in control of the speed, angle, depth etc.
Whether that be you pushing back or you getting on top, whatever works for you.If you are giving, make sure this happens and that you don’t push or stick anything in aggressively.
