How To Choke In Bed (as safe as possible)

According to a poll we carried out on our instagram stories, over 60% of you have tried Choking in the bedroom at least once.

This sexual act can be super dangerous when done incorrectly and most of us don't know how to do it correctly - we simply squeeze and hope for the best.

I have put this guide together to make sure you're experimenting with 'Breath Play' in the safest way possible.

This is an act that requires ALOT of trust and consent, and can never be 100% safe - please ensure this is the case and that regular check-ins are happening at all stages.

Top Choking Safety Tips

  • ALWAYS ask your partner if they want to be choked. Even if you’ve had sex  before, even if they’ve said they wanted it done before, this is not something to try without warning!
  • Avoid the front of the neck. If you apply pressure over the throat you can damage the throat and larynx.
  • ALWAYS have a 'tap out' gesture as it can be super easy to accidentally apply too much pressure.
  • Monitor your partner constantly, look them in the eyes - also super hot.
  • NEVER go in with a tight grip or forceful pressure; you can always press down a little more firmly if your partner asks or gestures for you to do so.
  • Use your PALM to avoid hitting your partner’s windpipe.
  • Do NOT pull your partner’s neck to the side while choking them.
  • Try to make this a rare treat, regular choking can cause long-term damage.
  • As with any sex act, communication is key when it comes to choking.

How To Choke Safely In Bed

In order to properly choke your partner, you have to apply pressure to the carotid artery. The carotid artery runs down the throat to the chest; the point that you want to strike is slightly below your partner’s jawline, closer to the ear than the chin.

Apply light, pulsing pressure; remember, the throat is a sensitive area, so it’s important to be gentle.

Make sure not to lean into the choke too much; the throat is not made to support your body weight.

Why Do We Like Choking?

"During choking, your brain is being starved of vital oxygen which can induce a lucid yet semi-hallucinogenic state and may cause you to fade in and out of consciousness and may create a feeling of euphoria.

The high that people experience soon after is due to the release of oxygen flowing back and the body exhaling. With an exhale, there is a release of dopamine and serotonin that can lead to a nice sensation as the body tries to recover itself." - Dr. Giuseppe Aragona
