In the 18th and 19th centuries, folks around the world got pretty worked up about the idea of self-pleasure. While masturbation wasn't exactly smiled upon in Judeo-Christian beliefs, the strict moral standards of the Victorian era, plus movements like the Great Awakening in America, really made it a really big deal.

In the USA, one of the loudest anti-masturbation voices was John Harvey Kellogg, a physician and devout Seventh-Day Adventist in, Michigan. 

Besides managing a surgical practice, he was also the editor of Good Health. Unfortunately, the magazine also promoted eugenics and outdated anthropological concepts under Kellogg's leadership. 

Kelloggs believed that sex, including masturbation, was harmful to physical, emotional, and spiritual health. He abstained from it himself, even on his honeymoon, spending it working on anti-sex literature. He and his wife maintained separate bedrooms and adopted 8 children while fostering another 34.

In his 1877 publication, "Plain Facts for Old and Young," Kellogg stated there were 39 symptoms he associated with chronic masturbation, encompassing mood fluctuations, acne, and epilepsy.

To address these concerns, Kellogg advocated for a dietary approach, persisting that simple fare such as cereals and nuts could stop sexual urges. This concept drew inspiration from Sylvester Graham, the originator of graham crackers. Thus, the inception of Kellogg's cereal ensued from these ideas.

Is it unhealthy to masturbate?

No. There are no negative health side effects from healthy masturbation - despite what you might read online or within groups like the #NOFAP movement. It is a perfectly natural thing to do and nothing to be ashamed of (regardless of gender).

The only time it may be unhealthy is if it becomes obsessive and you find it stopping you from carrying out your daily activities. There is no set healthy amount, it is all relative to the individual. This is something a sex therapist can help with.
